What You Will Do:
Under general supervision, supervises and coordinates the work of Surgical Support Technicians, who set up, check, clean, manage, distribute, and maintain the clinical, minimally invasive & video equipment used in all UMMC Operating Rooms.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Coordinates and supervises all operating room equipment support staff. Works in conjunction with Clinical Support Manager to develop work standards. Establishes and implements equipment cleaning, testing and distribution procedures.
A. Establishes and monitors work flow; determines work assignments, and assigns staff accordingly; schedules equipment activities according to urgency of need; schedules equipment stocking, deployment and cleaning activities in accordance with Quality Assurance Plan and without interruption to patient service.
B. Provides technical counsel to subordinate staff on codes, standards, maintenance, handling and cleaning of equipment.
C. Consults with medical staff regarding equipment/material problems to obtain sufficient information to expiate the problem in order to minimize down-time.
2. Coordinates and supervises the maintenance, minor repair and distribution of clinical equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.
A. Works in cooperation with Biomedical Engineering, when appropriate, for the repair and maintenance of clinical equipment.
B. Coordinates with Nurse Managers for the management, exchange, and distribution of equipment requiring maintenance or repair.
C. Ensures rotation of equipment for routine maintenance regularly.
3. In conjunction with assigned manager, develops, administers and ensures compliance with quality assurance measures which monitor the consistency and quality of services provided by the Anesthesia Technicians. Monitors and enforces the Joint Commission accreditation standards for plant technology and safety management for patient and employee safety.
A. Monitors timeliness of equipment cleaning/deployment to ensure efficient staff responsiveness.
B. Reviews potential safety hazards regularly, and documents actions taken to eliminate.
C. Performs regular checks of all stocking for accuracy and efficiency of operation;
D. Reports statistical data collected and action taken regarding quality of operation and performance to departmental management and appropriate clinical committees.
4. Supervises, evaluates and motivates the performance of Surgical Support Technicians assigned to the department.
A. Performs individual performance evaluations to ensure the overall satisfactory performance of the department, and recommends salary adjustments or disciplinary actions, as required.
B. Establishes clear and concise work procedures and expectations, assessing performance levels by monitoring results and providing positive and constructive feedback.
C. Recommends new hires, discharges, personnel changes and salary adjustments. Obtains approval from Director.
D. Provides on-going staff training and development.
5. Develops, in conjunction with manager, implements practices and general departmental policies and procedures to improve the efficiency of equipment servicing and operating efficiency in collaboration with Clinical Engineering.
A. Recommends more effective/efficient practices to assigned manager for improvement of the department's functioning.
B. Communicates policy and procedure changes to assigned staff, as appropriate.
6. Recommends to assigned manager equipment/material purchases and standardization based upon history, cost avoidance and experience with use of equipment/material.
7. Ensures accurate and efficient maintenance of departmental records and reports, such as files and relevant departmental performance statistics in accordance with JCAHO, Federal, State and local regulations.
8. Maintains professional growth and development through participating in in-services training, external seminars, workshops, conferences, professional affiliations and related activities/events to keep abreast of developments in the appropriate fields.
Patient Safety
Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
1. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
2. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
3. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
What You Need to Be Successful:
Education and Experience
1. High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required. College level education and certification in an applicable discipline is preferred.
2. A minimum of two (2) years experience in healthcare preferably as an Anesthesia Technician, Equipment Technician, Central Sterile Technician or a healthcare discipline directly applicable to operating room service delivery is required.
3. Previous supervisory/managed experience required. The nature of this position requires the incumbent to have a strong human resources “people” management aptitude.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
a. Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, proper conduct of an operating room, pharmacology and mathematics required.
b. Ability to interact in a professional leadership manner with Physicians and Nurses in the OR. Able to oversee the responsible activities of one or more operating rooms and one or more PODs while coordinating efforts in a teamwork and professional fashion with other Perioperative Services staff.
c. Fully knowledgeable of Perioperative Services operating policies and procedures as relates to Asset Management and Life-Cycle oversight of same. Acutely aware of equipment staging needs, trouble ticketing and reporting processes, and able to suggest improvements in operational flow. Fully understands performance measures and attempts to ensure achievement of quality metrics.
d. Ability to oversee and supervise the daily work activities of operating room support staff including the ability to assign work priorities, audit work quality, orient and train, and assist in implementing corrective action, as appropriate, under the direction of assigned manager..
e. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit.
f. Ability to work with patients possessing potentially infectious disease using the appropriate “Universal Precautions” and safety procedures.
g. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in working with various clinical personnel, to resolve problems and to properly identify and label supplies for inventory purposes.
